Assessing Student Progress in the Standards Based Classroom - An EARCOS WEEKEND WORKSHOP Presented by  Carolyn Coil

Picture
Carolyn Coil, an International Consultant for Assessment and Differentiation, presented a weekend workshop at Brent International School Subic last October 11 and 12, 2014. In this two day workshop, staff at BISS examined and created ways to develop effective and differentiated assessments for students in different subject areas.  The faculty were encouraged to create their own rubrics and criteria cards. Discussions centered on what type of rubrics to give students, what type of assessments should be graded, and how to clearly communicate assessment goals with students,

The first day of the workshop focused on defining assessment, developing assessment criteria cards and writing rubrics. The second day of the workshop focused on developing Individual lesson plans, and differentiated assessments. Everyone was encouraged to create their own assessment tools and share it with the group. The Middle school team are currently working on developing criteria cards for their departments to share.

Some comments from the workshop survey were:
  • "The simpler the rubric, the more effective it is."
  • "I can't wait to implement these strategies in my lessons!"
  • "There are a variety of ways to assess student work. I'm glad we had time to work on our own assessments and Carolyn was there to guide us!"
  • "I realized that students should be involved in assessments from beginning to end."
  • "I got TONS of helpful resources and have a new perspective on assessment!"
  • "I liked the idea of having criteria cards and having the student have access to a rubric that they can understand."
  • "I loved that we now know how to create meaningful rubrics tied to standards!"
  • "I like the idea that students can have a choice of their own assessment!"
